Chelsea never shy away from acquiring the best of talents no matter what the price or the history is. Likewise the Blues now want to sign Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry in the summer. German outlet Sport BILD have come up with the reports linking Chelsea to Gnabry. Despite having an already stacked attacking line-up, it is understood that Thomas Tuchel wants to add more.

Many of Chelsea’s big money signings in attack have failed to deliver, and some names could be on their way out in the summer. The Blues have splashed a total of €350 million on five attackers since 2019. The list includes Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku. However, each of the signings have been inconsistent with their performances, despite Chelsea winning the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup since their arrival. Some of these names could leave Stamford Bridge in the summer and Chelsea are hence lining-up their replacements.

Serge Gnabry appeases Chelsea and Tuchel

BILD reports Ex-Arsenal man Gnabry has impressed Thomas Tuchel and ticks all the boxes to succeed at Stamford Bridge. Given Serge Gnabry’s stats since joining Bayern Munich, Tuchel’s opinion cannot be contradicted. Gnabry was rejected by Arsenal after deemed to be ‘not good enough’ for the Gunners. Gnabry then spent a year each with West Bromwich, Werder Bremen and Hoffeinheim (loaned from Bayern Munich). Finally in 2018, Gnabry joined the Bayern Munich first-team and since has never looked back. The German winger has racked up whopping stats for the Bavarians since making his debut in 2018. So far in his 157 appearances for the club, Gnabry has scored 59 goals and assisted 39. The 26-year-old was also a crucial part of Bayern’s 2019-20 treble winning season. The 19/20 season is still a personal best for Gnabry where he scored 23 goals and assisted 14 in 46 games.

Besides the stats a possible reason for Tuchel and Chelsea to go after Gnabry has to be his versatility. Arguably there is no winger right now who can play so efficiently on both the wings. Despite being a natural right-winger, Gnabry has played on both the wings for Bayern and produced massive numbers. Out of his 157 games, Gnabry has played 89 on the right-wing with 56 goal contributions (31 goals and 25 assists). Moreover, when deployed on the left-wing Gnabry has chipped in 31 goal contributions (21 goals and and 10 assists) in 51 games. No other player on the Chelsea team-sheet can match that versatility or those numbers.

When Gnabry trolled the Blues

If you are mentioning that he is an ex-Arsenal man, there have to be incidents where he has trolled the Gunners’ rivals. Chelsea and Tottenham both suffered Gnabry’s trolling being one of Arsenal’s fiercest rivals. Bayern Munich played Tottenham and Chelsea in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League campaign. The Bavarians faced Tottenham in the group-stage and Lampard’s Chelsea in the last 16. Serge Gnabry scored a dazzling 4 goals and assisted 1 in Tottenham’s 7-2 thrashing by Bayern in North London. Up against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Gnabry put 2 in the back of the net to complete a 3-0 bashing. After the game Gnabry posted a picture on Instagram of him celebrating his goal at Stamford Bridge with a caption ‘London still red’, with reference to his loyalty with Arsenal.

Bayern ousted Chelsea 7-1 on aggregate and further knocked-out Barcelona and Lyon in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively before winning the competition against PSG in the final. Gnabry ended that UCL campaign with 9 goals and 2 assists in 10 games. Fast forward to defending champions of the UCL, Chelsea are ready to open talks with Gnabry given his contract expires in the summer of 2023. Though Gnabry is yet to sign an extension, Bayern are confident that he will commit his future with them.

Gnabry’s current market value is €70 million and Chelsea must start counting the pennies given Bayern will demand more if Gnabry is to leave. However, it may need a miracle for Gnabry to leave Bayern Munich. Bayern have their game-plan based on wingers and Gnabry along with Leroy Sane can replicate a partnership like Robben-Ribbery. But you never know what can happen in the footballing world and even a loyal Arsenal man like Gnabry can don their rivals’ shirt.
