Chelsea and Liverpool will lock horns in this season’s League Cup final on Sunday. Wembley will host the Premier League giants’ battle for the League Cup. Chelsea have reached their second final in four seasons and will be hoping to win their sixth cup. Record winners Liverpool have lifted the League Cup on eight occasions. However, the Reds will be playing their first League Cup final since 2012. Both the clubs are in for a fierce game, and former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has a clear opinion on the outcome.
Chelsea’s title hopes have crashed down since they sit 13 points behind leaders Manchester City. As a result, the Blues have turned their attention to other competitions where they are still alive. Starting from the League Cup final on Sunday, Chelsea are still fighting for the FA Cup as well as the Champions League. On the other hand, Liverpool received a huge boost in their title bid after Manchester City dropped points. However, both Chelsea and Liverpool come into the final on the back of some solid results. Chelsea won their first leg of last 16 over LOSC Lille at Stamford Bridge 2-0, whereas Liverpool thrashed Leeds United 6-0 in their last game before the final.
Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole predicts the result
A former Blues midfielder, Joe Cole will be in the pundits’ box for the final. Joe Cole spent seven years with Chelsea, from 2003 to 2010. Cole made 281 appearances for the club, scoring 40 goals and assisting 42. Joe Cole himself has lifted the League Cup twice with Chelsea in 2005 and 2007. However, Cole has also spent a forgettable spell with Liverpool from 2010 to 2013. His spell included two loan moves and only 42 appearances for the Reds.
Currently the technical coach of Chelsea academy, Joe Cole was speaking to BT Sport ahead of the final. Cole has backed his beloved club Chelsea to go all the way to lift the League Cup on Sunday. The former Blues’ midfielder said, “Thomas Tuchel will certainly have a plan. It’s probably the reason we didn’t see Jorginho [against Lille]. I’m going to throw it out there, Chelsea win it. I think they will lift the trophy. We’re all obviously really looking forward to it”. The academy coach looks pretty confident about his club’s chances and placed his full faith in Thomas Tuchel.
Chelsea legend and now the first-team’s performance advisor, Petr Cech has also conveyed his opinion on the final. Speaking to the club’s official website, Cech said, “We played Liverpool recently in the league, we know it will always be a very difficult game against them. There is a lot of energy from their side, a lot of energy from our side. It results in an exciting contest. Both teams will go for it. I’m expecting an exciting game and I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully we end up on the right side of things. It would be amazing to finish this month with another trophy,” added the three-time League Cup winner.
